"Some say it takes a village. We say it takes a family and we will be one, for Jan"... Barry Petersen

***Book: Jan’s Story: Love Lost to the Long Goodbye of Alzheimer’s...
Ten percent of all the author’s royalties from the sale of this book will go to the Alzheimer’s Association and a discussion guide from the Association will be included in the back of the book. Barry Petersen, an Emmy Award-winning Correspondent, shares his gut-wrenching journey and his equally tormented decision to emerge on the other side of depression and guilt. The book is part memoir and part open discussion of what a relationship means when a spouse is taken away by such an insidious disease. Some encouraged and condoned his path, others angrily condemned and shun him to this day. Early Onset Alzheimer’s is an especially virulent form of the disease striking between five and ten percent of Alzheimer’s patients, some as young as 30 years-old. But the greatest untold stories are the needs of caregivers as the years stretch out indefinitely and they find themselves terribly alone. Barry’s daughters urged him to try to meet someone as they fearfully watched the stress and isolation start wrecking his mental and physical health. It wasn’t until his mother-in-law pointed out that the Jan they knew and loved was gone, that he finally understood. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the number of people being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in this country is growing at a staggering rate.Today some five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. By 2050, that number could more than triple to 16 million. For every American stricken with Alzheimer’s, there may well be an equal number of spouses turned into caregivers and eventually, left behind with a spouse still alive and needing care, but whose mind and memories are gone. As Americans live longer and more productive lives into their 60s and 70s, they will feel that this disease attacked and robbed them, in the very prime of life. Think of it - more than 30 million people, roughly ten percent of Americans, may someday either have Alzheimer’s or be caring for someone with the disease. Barry’s tribute to Jan reads like the confidences from an old friend who has already shouldered the burden so many of us may one day experience. Bringing attention to this disease and its challenges will help others on this journey know that they are not alone. Jan’s Story is not an answer, but it is proof of survival. “I am starting a new life with someone else,” Barry says, “but we will always include Jan. We visit Jan and oversee her care, even though she often doesn’t know me when I’m there. My new companion is also my partner in caring for Jan. We three have become the new American family…and, sadly, there will soon be literally millions more like us.”
