EPISODE DESCRIPTION: This week Host Shirley W. Mitchell will be joined by her "Guest", Shawn Bloom, President-CEO of the National PACE Association - "Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly" as they discuss "The Generation of Younger Agers" with... National PACE Association, All Inclusive Care and Innovative Alternatives for Community Living.
GUEST: Shawn Bloom is the President and CEO of The National PACE Association - an organization that represents 74 operating PACE sites and approximately 40 additional health care organizations in various stages of PACE site development. Since joining NPA in (1999), the number of PACE locations has grown to serve over 17,000 participants around the Nation. Shawn has served as the Principal Investigator for many PACE-related grant supported efforts and his leadership has played an instrumental role in not only the growth of PACE, but health care policy reform in general. Shawn frequently speaks on behalf of PACE and health care policy topics at aging forums and numerous federal, state and local provider conferences. With over 25 years in the elder and health care industries, Shawn is a well-known expert with National and local media and frequently is called to testify before state and federal policymakers. Prior to assuming the role of President and CEO with NPA, Shawn spent 5 years as the Executive Director of the Missouri Association of Homes for the Aging (MoAHA), which represented over 100 not-for-profit long-term health care and housing facilities in the state of Missouri. Shawn previously worked in the Policy and Governmental Affairs Division of the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA), a Washington, D.C.-based trade association that represents approximately 6000 providers of long-term health and housing services for the aging. Shawn received his B.S. in biochemistry and gerontology from Kansas State University and completed his M.S. coursework in long term care at the University of North Texas, Center for Studies in Aging. Shawn began his career in the elder and health care industries early in life, working as a nursing home Certified Nurse Aide in high school and college.
PACE provides "Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly" - an Innovative Alternative to Nursing Home Care. The PACE model is centered around the belief that it is better for the well-being of seniors with chronic care needs and their families to be served in the community whenever possible. PACE serves individuals who are age 55 or older, certified by their state to need nursing home care, are able to live safely in the community at the time of enrollment, and live in a PACE service area. Although all PACE participants must be certified to need nursing home care to enroll in PACE, only about seven percent of PACE participants nationally reside in a nursing home. If a PACE enrollee does need nursing home care, the PACE program pays for it and continues to coordinate the enrollee's care. Currently 61 PACE programs are operational in 29 states. PACE programs are designed around a multidisciplinary team of professionals who work in partnership with family members to provide medical care and coordinated support services to keep seniors in their homes so they can be near friends and family. The care team includes doctors, nurses, social workers, physical therapists, nutritionists, transportation coordinators and much more. By working together to meet the care needs of each senior, the PACE team provides the helping hands so important to the health and well-being of aging adults, as well as their loving families. It is this care team that is the magic behind seniors remaining at home while they receive the best medical care and support possible. PACE is rapidly growing as an innovative model of care that provides older Americans with the care services and supports that enables them to live in their own homes and age with dignity. The common sense approach relies on a PACE team to provide medical care and coordinate support services helps keep people in their homes so they can be near friends and family. A hands-on approach and individualized patient attention makes PACE unique from other long-term care options with proven results in helping seniors remain healthy and independent. The magic of PACE is the coordinated team of experts, including medical doctors, psychologists, physical therapists, nutritionists and more, who partner with patients and their caregivers to provide an incomparable level of care allowing aging seniors to rest assured that they are receiving the highest quality of care.

***Book: Yesterday's Promise...
Melinda Johnson has always felt called to ministry. So, when her father, Bishop Langston Johnson, decides to step down after thirty years of leadership at Omega Christian Center, it seems only natural for her to take his place. But Bishop Johnson feels led by a God who has other things in mind, and to succeed him, he appoints Steven Marks - a man who is opposed to female pastors, not to mention the fact that he is Melinda’s ex-fiancé. Feeling defeated, Melinda nevertheless maintains her position as the church’s Missions and Community Outreach Director. Frequent interaction with the new bishop incites bitter sparring - and rekindles long-suppressed attraction, which grows only stronger when Melinda develops a relationship with Steven’s precious daughter, Brianna, who’s still struggling with the death of her mother. Can Steven and Melinda set aside past pains, forgive each other, and learn to love again? Or will their opposing positions regarding women preachers keep them forever at odds?
